The Different between the Two Research Articles
The first paper is a qualitative research and the second one is the quantitative research. The reasons are as follows:
First of all, the research methods in the first paper is through interviewing and observing children, teachers, parents, and administers’ interaction, reaction, language use and learning contexts, etc. The second paper is through students’ performance by taking pre- and post-tests after having the reading programs and through experiment, investigation, and data analysis.
Second, the relationship with subjects in paper one emphasizes on mutual trust and has intense contact, but the second study, subjects and researchers have short-term and distant relationship.
Third, data collection of the first paper is descriptive and the transcript of conversation; however, the second paper data is students’ scores, which are quantitative and statistical.
Fourth, data analysis of the first one is inductive, i.e., let the analysis emerge during data collection rather than structuring a study around a hypothesis or narrow question as the second paper, the deductive way to analyze data. When some of the important codes reoccur for many times, the researcher based on important topic to re-code one time, and start to construct theory. Besides, at the beginning, the new items are given new codes, such as teacher’s reaction, no Chinese policy, the context of teaching materials, so the second paper is a quantitative research paper.
Moreover, the research instrument in the first paper is tape recorder, transcriber and computer, but the second one is teaching props and test scores.
Furthermore, the research theories are written after some data have been collected, but the second paper, the quantitative research paper has detailed review of substantive literature which is stated prior to data collection.
In addition, the presentations of research findings are quite different. The first qualitative paper the researcher makes lots of data descriptions, but the second paper is based on statistical data to have the theory.
The limitations in these two papers are also different. The first one is time-consuming for six months, but the other only takes ten weeks. The first research is difficult to study large populations, so the result cannot be generalized to other researches, but the second research can much easier to collect students’ scores as data.
