Story Retelling Boxes: Using Props to Reenact Stories
Story reenactment (Herrell, 2000) is a strategy that requires students to retell the story in sequence with the use of simple costumes and/or props.  Story retelling boxes are used to store the costumes and/or props students use to retell the story, either by dressing up in costumes and portraying the action or by using small props to retell the story and demonstrate the action.  Story reenactment requires students to remember the sequence of the story, use some of the verbal interactions within the story to make characters come alive, and comprehend the main ideas in the story to portray the action.
Teachers can be creative in assembling props for the story to retelling boxes.  Flour, salt, and water clay makes sturdy props, as do flannel figures or laminated pictures with magnetic tape on the back.  Reviewing the story to create the list of props needed is a part of the strategy.  Students may be involved in choosing the stories for which prop boxes are to be made, listing the props needed, and even creating the props and decorating the boxes.  Once the props are created and the stories reenacted, the prop boxes are available for additional retelling and make interesting literacy centers.

Practicing the Retelling of Stories
The teacher introduces the concept of the story retelling by engaging the whole class or a small group of students in the retelling of a story they have read.  He/she walks the students through the story using the illustrations as prompts and asking, “What happened after that?” to keep the sequence going.
If the story being retold fits into a beginning, middle, and end structure, he/she can help the students to see that dividing the story into the parts, or “scenes,” that occur in each section helps them to remember the major events of the story.

Props such as puppets, finger puppets, posters, flashcard, picture cards, and picture books can help our students retell the story with fun and interests.
