Phonics is the ability to identify that there is a relationship between the individual sound (phonemes) of the spoken language and the letters (graphemes) of the written language.
There are 2 main approaches to teach phonics: synthetic phonics and analytic phonics.
1. Synthetic phonics is a highly systematic teaching program of sounds and their corresponding written symbols.
It focuses on the segmentation and blending of sounds in words.
2. Analytic phonics is the analysis of whole words to detect phonetic or orthographic (spelling) patterns.
By using onset and rime, children come to understand how to break words down rather than how to build them up.
