師大陳明溥教授分享「台灣數位教育遊戲研究之現況與發展願景」之心得省思
Reflection (May 22, 2012) Chia-Hui Cindy Shen

Because of our teacher, Prof. Lin, I had a chance to meet another professor, Ming-Puu Chen. Dr. Chen is the professor of the Graduate Institute of Information and Computer Education at NTNU. His research interests include computer-assisted learning, computer science education, and quality issues in e-learning. In his speech, he introduced lots of international conferences he attended and I think he is an active and productive researcher. I would like to check if there were any conferences that I could submit my proposals in the future. I believe I could have more inspiring discussions with scholars from different specialties.

In addition, Prof. Chen generously shared his power point to our class so that I could review all of the slides he talked to us. I was impressed by the third slide because he cooperates with other professors, such as Prof. Tsai’s specialty in technology enhanced science learning, and Prof. Huang’s major in classroom, ubiquitous and mobile technologies enhanced learning. Prof. Chen and these professors have made great effort and involved in the development and evaluation of quality assurance framework for e-learning under the National Science and Technology Program for e-Learning for many years. What he has done really makes great impact on the technological education.

I do agree with Prof. Chen’s viewpoint about learner-centric learning approach. In the 21st century language learning classroom, the learning paradigm had been moved from teacher-centered to student-centered. He asked one important question, ‘How can you encourage a child?’ He said every child has his or her own potential and intelligence; therefore, we should appreciate their unique characteristics, different rates of learning processes, or their behaviors. He said we cannot always measure students’ learning performance as the only outcome criterion. I agree with his opinions and I think it is important to motivate students’ interests in learning and make them feel confident in the learning process so that they could be inspired and gradually be strategic and successful learners in the future.

Furthermore, Prof. Chen’s research interests include digital game-based learning (DGBL), i.e., the combination of computer games and language teaching. Prof. Chen therefore develops lots of digital game-based learning, intelligent toy enhanced learning, and 2D or 3D instructional simulations. He makes students learn in the joyful context, be willing to take challenging tasks, and develop their own learning strategies. The participants are from different level, such as elementary school beginners to college students. As last month, our class had a field trip to Prof. Tsai’s eye-tracking lab at NTUST, the researchers at the lab demonstrated an English learning game for elementary school students. I think it is a trend to have a combination of games and eye-tracking facility to observe students’ reading behavior and measure their attention span. I am convinced that digital game-based learning has a stronger motivational pull than traditional learning venues. Prof. Chen’s studies not only prove the efficacy of digital-game based learning, but also pave the way for the application in language teaching.

After the speech, I think I would like to find more game-like activities for my students, such as vocabulary bingo, scrabbles, or massive multiplayer online role-playing (MMORPG) so that each of them has a chance to participate in the game. These games can help students maintain their attention, gain enjoyment, and facilitate their learning. But for the game designers, I think they need to fully understand and engage the school community in order to design educational computer games not only with pedagogical content but with attractive elements which appeal to students.

Overall, I do admire Prof. Chen’s active, positive and energetic attitudes in doing researches in technological studies. I am also thankful for our teacher, Prof. Lin. Because of this course, I am inspired to do further researches in integrating game-based learning associated with self-determination theory, learner’s autonomy, and L2 motivation. In brief, this was really a fruitful Tuesday afternoon.
